Scope and Contents
Records from Camden County (Ga.) departments including, courts (Superior, Inferior, Ordinary, Probate, Justice, and City Courts), Tax assessor, Sheriff, Education, and Elections.
Types of records in this collection include, tax digests (improved and wild), civil and criminal records, court minutes, interrogatories, judgments, dockets, deed indexes (including transactions involving slavery), land grants, plat drawings, and property indentures, estates (wills, guardianships, appraisals), census, sheriff sales (including transactions involving slavery), voter registries, election results, oaths of office, liquor shipments, livestock, timber, business, medical, and other county business records.
Absent are records pertaining to the Board of Commissioners as well as a select number of tax digests which are now held by the Georgia Archives. Indexes of these records are available at the Bryan-Lang Archives.
Also absent are the property deed records which can be accessed at Camden County Superior Court. Deed indexes for transactions up to the early 1900s are available in this collection.
Lost to history are the records which were destroyed due to fire (in Jefferson), left behind in prior courthouses (St. Marys), or slowly rotted away due to improper storage locations (courthouse attics and external storage units).
